A homeowner in upstate New York fatally shoots a woman, 20, after she pulls into the wrong driveway sheriff

Authorities say a 20-year-old woman was killed by a homeowner in upstate New York on Saturday night after the driver of the vehicle she was riding in pulled into the incorrect driveway. The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported that Kaylin Gillis, a resident of Saratoga County, was in the car with three friends when they took a wrong turn into a driveway while trying to find a friend's home in the town of Hebron. Authorities claim that Kevin Monahan, the owner of the house the group unintentionally parked at, fired two bullets at the car from his terrace as the driver was getting out. One of the shots struck Gillis.

During a Monday press conference, Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy announced that 65-year-old Monahan had been detained and was facing second-degree murder charges. It's a very terrible story about some young people who were seeking for a friend's house and wound up at the home of this individual, who then decided to pull a gun and shoot it," Murphy added. Around 10 p.m., when shots were fired, Gillis and the friends fled in order to ask for assistance in a nearby town because there was no dependable cellular reception in the area, according to Murphy. When first responders arrived at the car, Gillis had already been declared dead.

She simply had so much life left in her since she was so young. Gillis' cousin Haleigh Eustis, 20, told The Post on Monday night that Gillis had a very devoted boyfriend with whom she was much in love. I have no idea how he is feeling at this moment. I am aware that they were joined at the hip. She also came from a caring family. She had such a strong backbone since she was raised in such a loving, large household. And I'm furious that she can't have that any more.

According to Murphy, there was no interaction between the car's passengers and the homeowner. Murphy stated that the group of pals never got out of the vehicle. Unknown is how long the automobile was. There is obviously no threat from anyone inside the car, according to Murphy. "Mr. Monahan has no cause to fear for his safety," Monahan, a laborer, was apparently uncooperative when deputies arrived at the house. For more than an hour, he resisted leaving his house, causing "a bit of a situation" before he was arrested, according to Murphy.

Before making an appearance in a Washington County court later, Monahan is being detained in the nearby Warren County. According to the Times Union's citation of open records, Gillis' father works as a corrections officer at the Washington County jail. According to a source cited by the publication, the police don't think alcohol or mental illness played a role in the shooting. Gillis's grieving family and close friends were still in shock.

She was one of those children who inspires the thought, "I wish she were my kid," She was incredibly sensitive to other people's needs and emotions," said Stark. "However, there was no shortage of assurance. She was clear about her goals. She was confident in her voice and unafraid to be original. She sobbed when her daughter informed her of Gillis' passing. "Everyone in a tiny town is your child. Even though it's not a family member, it's terrible. She stated, referring to Gillis' parents, "I can only image how heartbroken Angel and Andy are. Gillis' cousin Eustis referred to her as the "goofball of the group. She loved playing these games where she had to create something from nothing, according to Eustis.
